Lost Churches
– Rediscovering the Vanished City of London
Before 1666 there were well over a hundred churches in the City of London.
Fire, war and municipal vandalism have contributed to the disappearance
of many of them. But, they haven't vanished entirely: you can still see them
if you know where to look.
This walk lasts about 2.5 hours stopping in 'ye olde pub' along the way.
Meet: Courtyard in front of the Church of St Mary Aldermary, Bow Lane.
Nearest Underground Station: Mansion House, Exit 4 (Bow Lane).
Cost: £7 per person
Saturday
11 July at 11.00 am:
Samuel Pepys' City
– A Leisurely Stroll Through Restoration London
Samuel Pepys was a respected naval administrator and a trusted servant of
the Crown. But most of us don't remember him for that. We remember him for
the secret diary in which he recorded his candid and uncensored opinions of
people he met and the events he witnessed. His first-hand accounts of the
plague of 1665 and the Great Fire of 1666 still bring 17th-century London
vividly to life.
This walk lasts about 2.5 hours with a convivial coffee break along the way.
Meet: Tower Hill, by the statue of the Emperor Trajan.
Nearest Underground Station: Tower Hill.
Cost: £7 per person
